The 2025 Mazda EZ6 sedan has made its debut in China, marking a significant shift in Mazda’s lineup by replacing the long-standing internal combustion Mazda 6. This new model, a sibling to the Chinese market Deepal SL03 from Mazda's joint venture partner Changan, is available in both all-electric and range extender plug-in hybrid variants. While the EZ6 shares many similarities with the Deepal SL03, it distinguishes itself with unique front and rear designs, though it retains the same overall frame and wheelbase.
The Mazda EZ6 is notably larger than its predecessor, with dimensions measuring 4,921 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,485 mm in height. It shares a 2,900 mm wheelbase with its SL03 twin, offering more interior space than the older Mazda 6. The design language of the EZ6 has evolved, featuring slimmer rectangular daytime running lights, a lower main headlight beam, full-width tail lights, and a retractable spoiler, which marks a new direction for Mazda’s styling.
Inside, the EZ6 is packed with advanced features that set it apart from previous models. It boasts a 14.6-inch infotainment system, the largest ever installed in a Mazda, along with a digital instrument cluster, touch-sensitive steering wheel controls, and an augmented reality head-up display. The audio experience is enhanced by a 14-speaker Sony sound system, while the 64-color ambient lighting and panoramic sunroof add to the vehicle's luxury feel. The interior design draws inspiration from Mazda’s CX-60 and CX-90 models, featuring tan-colored accents, unique air vents, chrome details, perforated leather upholstery with a central stripe, and a circular steering wheel horn pad.
In addition to its debut in China, Mazda has filed trademarks for the names Mazda 6E and 6E in Europe, suggesting that an all-electric successor to the Mazda 6 may be on the horizon for markets outside China. This new model could be based on Mazda's own SkyActiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, rather than the China-specific platform used for the EZ6 and Deepal SL03. An all-electric Mazda 6 successor would likely compete with popular electric vehicles like the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and BYD Seal, as well as premium midsize electric cars such as the BMW i4 and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA EV.
Mazda’s commitment to electrification is becoming increasingly evident. The company’s current electric offerings, like the MX-30 EV and the now-discontinued China-only CX-30 EV, highlight Mazda’s dedication to this transition. Looking ahead, Mazda plans to introduce a range of new electrified models by 2025, including hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles.
